Bec Skurrie

PhD Candidate

Bec Skurrie is a current PhD student with Deakin University, working on developing tools for managing the invasive Asian shore crab, Hemigrapsus sanguineus. Bec has completed her Bachelor’s degree in Zoology and Animal Science and an Honours project investigating the use of environmental DNA (eDNA) with tracking Mako sharks for the VFA (Victorian Fisheries Authority). She is now utilising eDNA, as well as other laboratory tools and fieldwork tactics to research H. sanguineus, which was reported in Port Phillip Bay in 2020. Bec and her team is partnered with the Victorian Government for this project, with hopes of managing and/or eradicating this invasive species.
